Gynecomastia refers to male breast enlargement. This can be a very distressing symptom for men who may feel so self-conscious about their bodies that they are reluctant to show their bare chests in public or even private settings and may wear compression shirts to keep the breast tissue as flat as possible. Some may think that gynecomastia only occurs with excessive weight gain. While some fatty tissue can develop around the breasts, gynecomastia remains generally the same despite a man’s weight.
For some, this can be due to a prescription medication or steroid use. For most, gynecomastia is related to genetics or may be unrelated to any known cause. This can lead to a feeling of lack of power in treating these symptoms. Thankfully, cosmetic surgeons have several options for improving the look of a male breast.
Cosmetic Procedures to Treat Gynecomastia
All cosmetic surgeons are trained to deal with both female and male breasts. The treatment chosen depends on the extent and type of gynecomastia. For example, some men may only have an enlargement of fatty tissues. In these cases, liposuction is an easy treatment that can be used, and that has very few side effects. Smaller amounts of fatty tissue can sometimes be treated with non-invasive techniques, such as the newer CoolSculpting treatments.
Many men have fatty breast tissue along with denser breast tissue, which cannot be removed through a liposuction cannula. In these cases, the cosmetic surgeon will need to perform an invasive surgery under general anesthesia. Most of the time, the surgery can be performed through a single incision on either breast directly beneath the areola. These incisions are quite easy to conceal. Men who have a great deal of excessive skin that must also be removed will need several incisions to remove all the unwanted tissue successfully. Men who have plenty of chest hair will have no problem covering up the incision. However, even men on whom the incisions are obvious are generally quite happy with the results of the surgery and feel more prepared to go out in public.
