Is Skin Care Really That Different for Darker Skin Tones?

August 17, 2019
Dr. Tavoussi - Is Skin Care Really That Different for Darker Skin Tones? Is all skin the same, or do some tones react differently to certain products and procedures? If you naturally have a darker skin tone or are a person of color, this question will be quite important to you as its answer could affect how well your skin ages and what types of treatments you can get. Here are a few skincare tips and treatment options to get you started.

Prevent Ashiness

One of the top problems you may find yourself facing as you age is an ashy skin tone. The key way to get past this is by moisturizing regularly and using only gentle cleansing products. While you want to choose a cleanser that gets rid of the excess surface oils that you may find yourself fighting against, you do not want to dry out your skin too much.

Be Careful with Chemical Exfoliants

Chemical peels are great for rejuvenating the skin. However, certain peels are not that great for darker skin tones. You may find that your skin is very sensitive to chemicals. Instead, choose a physical exfoliating treatment or a light peel that does not raise your risk of hyperpigmentation.

Prevent Dark Spots

As you can imagine, hyperpigmented spots can be a real problem for individuals with darker skin tones. Anything causing inflammation can eventually lead to dark spots. Therefore, you should do everything possible to reduce sun exposure and to reduce scarring from acne. Hydroquinone-containing products are great options if you already have dark spots while daily sunscreen can help you prevent future spots from forming.

Choose the Right Treatment

Although you must be careful about the cosmetic skin treatments you choose, there are several that work well on darker skin tones. Certain low-level lasers, such as YAG lasers and Clear + Brilliant, work well. In addition, microneedling and dermaplaning provide safe skin renewal and may help to fade existing dark spots.
When you work with a trusted cosmetic provider, you can rest easy knowing that the treatments you are receiving are specially chosen with your exact skin needs and skin tone in mind. Dr. Tavoussi works with men and women of all ethnicities and can help you determine exactly which procedure could be right for you based on your skin needs and goals.
