How Does Micro-Needling Assist In Healing
Micro-needling uses a very small needle that includes many micro-needles to create extremely small channels into the skin. Once these channels are made, the body immediately sets off a healing response, which in turn produces necessary collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin create a smoother, firmer appearance to the skin, naturally smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines and making the skin appear plumper and smoother. Micro-needling can be used to reduce signs of aging, to combat sunspots and even to fight against the ravages of acne.
Because the needles are so small, micro-needling is really not painful. It simply feels like something rough being placed against the skin. However, patients can request a topical anesthetic prior to the procedure. Platelet-rich plasma is often applied topically following micro-needling to aid further in the natural healing and rejuvenation process. The plasma is retrieved from the patient’s own blood using a very small vial of blood. The plasma makes its way into the skin using the small channels created during micro-needling.
Returning for Future Micro-Needling Sessions
Micro-needling can create some initial bruising and swelling. The skin may regain its normal appearance within 24 hours, or it may take up to 3 days for total healing to occur. The results of a full set of micro-needling sessions last at least six months with some experts seeing results in their patients up to 18 months to 2 years later. Most patients need at least three treatments to see the results they want while others may require up to eight treatments. Treatments should be spaced approximately one month apart. The doctor will give specific instructions regarding treatment timing to ensure the best results.
