How is Laser Skin Resurfacing Done?
Dr. Tavoussi uses a laser to remove the damaged skin. Several layers of skin may need to be removed, and each layer is removed one at a time. Once the damaged skin is removed new skin cells form during the healing process that is healthy and undamaged, giving your skin a younger and firmer surface that is free if all the imperfections you wanted to be removed.
How to Prepare for Laser Skin Resurfacing
If you are considering a skin resurfacing procedure to obtain a naturally looking healthy skin rejuvenation, schedule a consultation with Dr. Tavoussi. During the consultation, you will be asked about the state of your overall health. You will also be asked if you are prone to develop fever blisters or cold sores around your mouth. It is important to be honest with Dr. Tavoussi because skin resurfacing can trigger breakouts of cold sores and fever blisters if you are already at risk for developing them.
Your risk of developing fever blisters and cold sores, however, does not automatically eliminate your option to have the skin resurfacing procedure performed. All it means is that Dr. Tavoussi will most likely prescribe an antiviral medication to try to prevent an outbreak of fever blisters and cold sores. He may also give you a prescription for an antibiotic to prevent a bacterial infection.
Preparing for the Skin Resurfacing Procedure
Dr. Tavoussi will request that you do not take any medications, vitamins, herbs, aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, or blood thinning medications in the ten days prior to your procedure.
What to Expect During the Skin Resurfacing Procedure
The procedure is done in an outpatient facility such as a hospital or surgical center, and you can go home the same day. If you only have laser treatment performed on a few specific areas of your face, a local anesthetic will be used, and you will remain awake during the skin resurfacing procedure. The time the procedure with local anesthesia takes to complete is about 30 to 45 minutes.
If you are having the procedure done on your entire face, you will be put to sleep with general anesthesia, and the procedure takes about two hours.
What to Expect After the Skin Resurfacing Procedure
You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, and if you had the general anesthesia someone would need to stay with you for 24 hours. On the following day, you will need to start cleaning the areas that were treated four to five times a day, applying the prescribed ointment, and if necessary bandaging those areas.
Swelling is a common side effect, and if you had the procedure done around your eyes, Dr. Tavoussi would give you a prescription for steroids to help manage the swelling.
When all is said and done, you will have beautiful, flawless facial skin again.
